EVERYBODY! Only requirement is that you should already know cycling. GMC caters to the experienced cyclists as well as the newbie cyclist. ICYCLE.in conducts ‘GMC Practice Rides’ to help the GMC hopefuls to get a hang of long distance cycling before the attempting the ultimate ride. Ranging from a easy 25kms for the FIRST practice ride to 120kms for the LAST practice ride, these practice rides not only help you activate your ‘cycling muscles’ but also prepares you, psychologically!

Definitely! Apart from a little bit of cycling experience, the most important factor to complete the GMC2016 ride is PERSEVERENCE. To help you complete the ride, the ICYCLE team provides complete back-up support. A support vehicle, mentor cyclist, technicians, etc… will ensure that you enjoy cycling in the Malnad region.

Well spaced out support-stations along the trail offers pit-stop opportunities for cyclists to relax and rejuvenate. A fleet of support vehicles (trucks, station wagons, motor bikes, ambulance) cater to all the needs of the cyclists. A Mentor Cyclist and a support vehicle will always be at the back to support the last riders. Each vehicle is equipped with first-aid, bicycle tools, water & refreshments, etc…

As long as you are ready to cycle, you can continue enjoying the GMC2016 ride the next day. Sweeping of the laggard cyclists will start by 5:00PM, everyday!

The GMC2016 trail passes through some of the remotest parts of the Western ghats. In most of the places, we will have to make do with homestays and resorts. Since these places will not be able to accommodate everybody, a few cyclists will be housed in tents, specially setup for the event. The tents will be on twin-sharing basis and the few rooms that will be available will sometimes have 2 or 3 cyclists sharing. Some places dormitories will also are a part of the accommodation plan. Women will be clubbed with other women cyclists for accommodation.
Dinner will always be at the place where we’ll be staying for the night. Breakfast and lunch will be ‘picnic-style’ with outdoor catering at conducive places along the way.

The menu at GMC2016 is predominantly vegetarian, with an occasionally serving of non-veg. Boiled eggs will be available every morning, before the start of the ride, along with milk and oats.
Breakfast will be an daily assortment of idli, upma, rice bath, vada, etc… and also bread & jam!
Lunch will mainly consist of the local cuisine with a default serving of rice & sambar, along with variations, like, paddu, chapathi, sweets, etc…
Dinner will be very similar to lunch, except for non-veg fare in a couple of places.

There are very few opportunities for shopping in the GMC2016 trail, except when we pass through a few major towns.

Keep it to a minimum. ONE BIG BAG containing all your belongings will be perfect. Avoid lap-tops and high-end cameras, unless it is imperative. The Organizers will not be able to assure safety of these kind of sensitive electronic gadgets. 3-sets of cycling apparels will be sufficient. They can be used on a rotational basis as there is no facility for laundry during the trip. Have a few casual clothes to wear during the non-riding time, like, evenings! A comfortable pair of slippers will be good. Apart for tooth-brush, paste and soap also carry along a mosquito repellant cream. There will no need for formal clothes!

As the name suggests, GMC2016 is an All India MTB Challenge and hence MTBs are the best suited bicycles for the ride. Some stretches of the trail cannot be negotiated on road-bikes and hybrids. To ensure safety of participants, only MTBs are allowed in GMC2016.

Over 20 women cyclists have participated in the Great Malnad Challenge series and each one of them have returned with pleasant memories of the trip. Though we will be cycling in some of the remotest parts of the Western ghats, there will be mentor cyclists and support vehicles accompanying the women riders. Moreover, the locals enroute the ride are very friendly, though at time they may get on your nerves with their curiosity.
